I had studied the maps and lake bathymetry over and over again and found a great area near a public beach at the north end. I knew that at any moment a school of big smallies could pull in on any of these spots. It was as good as anything so I rolled with it.

The First Ever FLW-KBF Event
The upcoming weekend was the first ever FLW-KBF event, Nickajack Lake, and I was going. I was fired up, and quite nervous. There was an opportunity to walk across the big stage of the FLW, hear Chris Jones call out my name, maybe even get a signature WOW. This was big.
From Lake Anna to Saratoga Lake
Two tournaments, about 900 miles of driving, 3 days of pedaling my kayak, and only 12 hours of sleep. It was a crazy weekend.
Fishing for $50,000
I had barely slept a wink. A late night at the house making last minute plans, combined with the excitement (and uncomfortable sofa) led to minimal sleep. But I didn’t care. The coffee pot churned and the house buzzed with eager excitement as all of us loaded up and set out to start the day!
Figuring It Out at the NC
The drive down to Shreveport was relatively uneventful. I made it to Cincinnati Saturday evening where I stopped to visit my cousin for the night. It was great having a home cooked meal and a bed to sleep in; rather than fast food and sleeping in hotel F-150.
The Road to the 2019 NC
One year ago I followed along as anglers I had never met competed for a $100,000 top prize. The conditions on Kentucky Lake were tough that year, but it was exciting none-the-less. I knew then, in 2019 it would be my turn to take the wheel (or paddle) and see what I could accomplish against some of the best kayak anglers in the nation.
